Earlier this week, Pinterest announced the release of Buyable Pins — a new way for merchants to sell products through Pinterest on desktop and mobile.
For consumers, Buyable Pins make it easier to move from a Pin to purchase. For businesses, this opens a door to a large new audience who loves to shop.
Here’s everything you need to know about selling on Pinterest and shopping with Buyable Pins.
What are Buyable Pins?
Buyable Pins are a simple, secure way to buy products you discover on Pinterest.
Using the new Buy it button, consumers that use Pinterest will soon be able to shop and securely checkout with the products they find on Pinterest - all without ever leaving the app.
How do I buy things on Pinterest with Buyable Pins?
When you spot a Pin with a blue price, you’ll know you can buy it right from the app.
Pinners can also use the new price filter to narrow their options and find great products that fit their budget.
After viewing the Pin and tapping the Buy it button, Pinterest users can easily check out using Apple Pay or their credit card.
When will Buyable Pins show up on Pinterest?
If you’re in the US, Buyable Pins are already appearing on iOS and Android OS mobile devices through the Pinterest mobile app found in iTunes and Google Play stores as well as on desktop.
When will Buyable Pins arrive on the Pinterest website and Android App?
Pinterest made Buyable Pins available for Android OS mobile device users in 2015 and desktop users will start seeing Buyable Pins as of July 2016.
How many products will have Buy it buttons?
As more businesses recognize the potential of Buyable Pins and sign up to start selling on Pinterest, more and more Pinned products will receive a Buy it button.
With the help of Shopify store owners and some of the world’s biggest brands, Pinterest expects to have more than two million Buyable Pins active by the end of the month.
What makes Pinterest a great place to sell?
87% of Pinterest users say they have purchased something they discovered while Pinning. Additionally, the average order value of sales coming from Pinterest is $50 – higher than any other major social platform.
The introduction of Buyable Pins helps turn Pinterest from a great source of online store traffic to a great source of orders and sales.
How do I start selling on Pinterest with Buyable Pins?
If you have an online store with Shopify, you can start selling on Pinterest by adding the Pinterest sales channel in your Shopify admin.
If you aren’t yet a Shopify merchant and would like to sell using Buyable Pins, you’ll need to sign up for an online store with Shopify and set up the Pinterest sales channel.
I don't have a website with Shopify. Can I still sell on Pinterest with Buyable Pins?
Shopify is currently the only platform that small and medium-sized businesses can use to sell using Buyable Pins.
Larger retailers like Macy’s, Neiman Marcus, and Nordstrom are also selling on Pinterest through direct partnerships with the company.
What’s the difference between Rich Pins and Buyable Pins?
Rich Pins allow content creators to add additional information to their Pins. Product information, map locations and app installs are just a few of the ways Rich Pins can provide more value to Pinterest users.
Buyable Pins expand on that functionality by allowing Pinterest users to shop and securely checkout, right within Pinterest’s mobile app and desktop experience.
Are Buyable Pins available to merchants outside of the USA?

I installed the Pinterest channel in Shopify. What do I do next?
Once you’re approved by Pinterest, any product that’s ever been Pinned from your online store will automatically become a Buyable Pin and include a Buy it button.
From there, you’ll want to continue to post your products to Pinterest, encourage your customers to Pin, and get the word out about your new Buyable Pins.
All of your Pinterest orders, products and customers will automatically be synchronized with Shopify, just like any other sales channel.

What could prevent me from qualifying to use Buyable Pins?
The most common issues preventing merchants from participating in the Buyable Pins program are incompatible payment gateways, prohibited items or an unsupported currency.
To take advantage of Buyable Pins, merchants will need to switch to a compatible payment gateway, offer their products in USD, and ship to US addresses.
Why isn’t my payment gateway compatible?
Since Pinterest’s checkout experience accepts payment via Apple Pay, only gateways that support Apple Pay are compatible with Buyable Pins.
Payment gateways currently compatible with Apple Pay and Buyable Pins include Shopify Payments, Stripe, Braintree, FirstData, Authorize.Net, and CyberSource.
What happens when an order gets processed through a Buyable Pin?
When a Pinterest user purchases through a Buyable Pin, Pinterest sends all relevant order details and credit card data securely through the merchant’s native checkout system.
Once the merchant receives a notification that the order details were received, they can then fulfill the order exactly as though it was captured from their own site.
If you use Shopify, all of your Pinterest orders, products and customers will automatically synchronize with Shopify, just like any other sales channel.
Does it cost anything to enable Buyable Pins?
Pinterest isn’t charging for the service nor taking a cut of merchants’ profits. If your business qualifies for Buyable Pins, you can start selling on Pinterest for free.
